An introduction to West London, from a Londoner’s point of view

West London refers to areas West of Central London and the River Thames. This area overlaps the informal Central, West East and West West London areas. The West London area starts at the Strand which is the eastern edge of the City of London. In the old days, anything west of the City was considered the outskirts. West London now stretches all the way to Ealing and up to Chiswick. Most of West London is well served by the tube and on the western reaches, the overground train services.

Here is a quick tour of West London, we will start just past the Strand and we find Covent Garden with it’s piazza full of shops, pubs and restaurants. Very lively area with a lot of street entertainment and sometimes live opera is screened from the Royal Opera House next door. This is also home to the Theatreland, where all the West End Theatres are. This is one of the gems of London, the rich culture that is unique to London. Just next to this is Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and Picadilly circus, home of the famous Eros statue.

West of here, we get to Mayfair which has some beautiful homes, the hedge fund corridor and great shopping areas like Bond Street and Oxford Street. On the western edge of this, we find Park Lane of posh homes and posh hotels like the Dorchester and the Grosvenor House. At the top end of Park Lane is the Marble Arch. Hyde Park is the big green area for Central London and it is now the venue for a lot of open air music concerts.

Moving along, we find Lancaster Gate which sits next to Bayswater and Queensway, home of cheap tourist hotels, the Whiteleys shopping centre and ethnic restaurants. Notting Hill is the next stop as you go along the Central Line, made infamous by the film. Notting Hill is a mix between the expensive and sophisticated streets in the south to the edgier areas along Portobello road leading up to Kensal Green. Along the way, you will find Ladbroke Grove (much cleaned up) and where the yearly Notting Hill Carnival is the main event.

Just west of this you find Holland Park, the most expensive residential street in London with massive “villas” and home to some rich and famous residents. The Aussies have just built the massive new Westfield Shopping Centre at Shepherds Bush which is a real gift to Londoners as they can shop without having to brave the weather.

Past here, you will find Acton, Ealing and if you go a bit further south towards the river, you find Chiswick. The walk along the Thames path from the Hammersmith Bridge is a fun Sunday activity, especially since there are quite a few charming pubs along the way.
