An introduction to South London, from a Londoner’s point of view

South London refers to areas south of Central London and the River Thames. This area overlaps the informal Central, South East and South West London areas. South West London starts in SW1 which is the Victoria and Pimlico area. This area incorporates a lot of commercial and government buildings leading down to the river, past Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. Pimlico is a genteel residential area which neighbours the more expensive Chelsea.

Moving west past Pimlico, you get to Chelsea, Kings Road which is one of the poshest parts of town. Property prices used is at the top end for London but you are paying to live with the beautiful people. Kings Road is a shopping area with some quirky shops mixed in with the high street favourites. The new Saatchi Gallery in the old Yorks Barracks is well worth a visit. Fulham a bit further west has a different feel to Chelsea, slightly cheaper property prices, lots of green areas and perfect for families. The area around Parsons Green has a lot of bars and restaurant and is a very lively area. Fulham was formerly the seat of the diocese of "Fulham and Gibraltar", and Fulham Palace the past official residence of the Bishop of London, (now a museum), the grounds of which are now divided between public allotments and a sophisticated botanical garden. Two Premiership football clubs (Fulham and Chelsea) are situated in the Fulham area.

Going south of the river, you cross Putney Bridge and you get to Putney.
Going East from Putney, you get to Wandsworth and Clapham. The area between Clapham and Wandsworth Commons is immensely popular, and always in great demand as it has a wonderful village atmosphere. It is ideal for young families and those looking for a lively area in which to live and socialise. Areas like Clapham have been highly yuppified since the 80s.
In South East London, the areas are more varied mixing in beautiful old houses right next to council owned tower blocks. Areas around Dulwich are very popular with young families. Dulwich Village is a charming old village that is only 5 miles from Central London. One of the main attractions here is the Dulwich picture gallery. Further south from here, you will find Crystal Palace, next to areas like Sydenham. Crystal Palace is the home to the original Crystal Palace, the Crystal Palace Park which is a favourite of local resident.
