An introduction to North London, from a Londoner’s point of view
North London starts at N1 which is Islington, just north of the City is a varied and culturally diverse place. Much loved by the left-wing middle classes who discovered this areas charm and its many splendid Georgian and Victorian properties in the 1970s, they have populated and popularised it ever since.
Additionally, Islington, like the wider North London community is also a working-class enclave.
Stoke Newington has benefited from the popularity of Islington and is now a much sought after residential area. Further north towards Highgate, you get a mix of old Victorian houses on a hill overlooking Alexandra Palace and mix of some high rise and estates. Set in Alexandra Park, Alexandra Palace was built in an area between Hornsey, Muswell Hill and Wood Green in North London, England, in 1873 as a public centre of recreation, education and entertainment and as North London’s counterpart to the Crystal Palace in South London.
Crouch End and Muswell hill are favourites with young families with the green areas nearby and more spacious accommodation.

An introduction to South London, from a London Man and Van’s point of view
South London refers to areas south of Central London and the River Thames. This area overlaps the informal Central, South East and South West London areas. South West London starts in SW1 which is the Victoria and Pimlico area. This area incorporates a lot of commercial and government buildings leading down to the river, past Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. Pimlico is a genteel residential area which neighbours the more expensive Chelsea.
Moving west past Pimlico, you get to Chelsea, Kings Road which is one of the poshest parts of town. Property prices used is at the top end for London but you are paying to live with the beautiful people. Kings Road is a shopping area with some quirky shops mixed in with the high street favourites.
The new Saatchi Gallery in the old Yorks Barracks is well worth a visit. Fulham a bit further west has a different feel to Chelsea, slightly cheaper property prices, lots of green areas and perfect for families. The area around Parsons Green has a lot of bars and restaurant and is a very lively area. Fulham was formerly the seat of the diocese of “Fulham and Gibraltar”, and Fulham Palace the past official residence of the Bishop of London, (now a museum), the grounds of which are now divided between public allotments and a sophisticated botanical garden. Two Premiership football clubs (Fulham and Chelsea) are situated in the Fulham area.
Going south of the river, you cross Putney Bridge and you get to Putney.
Going East from Putney, you get to Wandsworth and Clapham. The area between Clapham and Wandsworth Commons is immensely popular, and always in great demand as it has a wonderful village atmosphere. It is ideal for young families and those looking for a lively area in which to live and socialise. Areas like Clapham have been highly yuppified since the 80s.Your friendly Man and Van London can help you if you are thinking of moving to this part of South London.
In South East London, the areas are more varied mixing in beautiful old houses right next to council owned tower blocks. Areas around Dulwich are very popular with young families. Dulwich Village is a charming old village that is only 5 miles from Central London. One of the main attractions here is the Dulwich picture gallery. Further south from here, you will find Crystal Palace, next to areas like Sydenham. Crystal Palace is the home to the original Crystal Palace, the Crystal Palace Park which is a favourite of local resident.

A Man and Van’s introduction to West London, from a Londoner’s point of view
West London refers to areas West of Central London and the River Thames. This area overlaps the informal Central, West East and West West London areas. The West London area starts at the Strand which is the eastern edge of the City of London. In the old days, anything west of the City was considered the outskirts. West London now stretches all the way to Ealing and up to Chiswick. Most of West London is well served by the tube and on the western reaches, the overground train services.
Here is a quick tour of West London, we will start just past the Strand and we find Covent Garden with it’s piazza full of shops, pubs and restaurants. Very lively area with a lot of street entertainment and sometimes live opera is screened from the Royal Opera House next door. This is also home to the Theatreland, where all the West End Theatres are. This is one of the gems of London, the rich culture that is unique to London. Just next to this is Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and Picadilly circus, home of the famous Eros statue.
West of here, we get to Mayfair which has some beautiful homes, the hedge fund corridor and great shopping areas like Bond Street and Oxford Street. On the western edge of this, we find Park Lane of posh homes and posh hotels like the Dorchester and the Grosvenor House. At the top end of Park Lane is the Marble Arch. Hyde Park is the big green area for Central London and it is now the venue for a lot of open air music concerts.
Moving along, we find Lancaster Gate which sits next to Bayswater and Queensway, home of cheap tourist hotels, the Whiteleys shopping centre and ethnic restaurants. Notting Hill is the next stop as you go along the Central Line, made infamous by the film. Notting Hill is a mix between the expensive and sophisticated streets in the south to the edgier areas along Portobello road leading up to Kensal Green. Along the way, you will find Ladbroke Grove (much cleaned up) and where the yearly Notting Hill Carnival is the main event. Thinking of moving from West London, your friendly Man with a Van London can surely give you a hand.
Just west of this you find Holland Park, the most expensive residential street in London with massive “villas” and home to some rich and famous residents. The Aussies have just built the massive new Westfield Shopping Centre at Shepherds Bush which is a real gift to Londoners as they can shop without having to brave the weather.
Past here, you will find Acton, Ealing and if you go a bit further south towards the river, you find Chiswick. The walk along the Thames path from the Hammersmith Bridge is a fun Sunday activity, especially since there are quite a few charming pubs along the way.

You may find this to be a universal truth: kids love the box more than they love the toy. Ask any parents and also they may tell you that their toddlers often end up spending much more time crawling in and also out of cardboard boxes on Christmas morning than they do inspecting their new toys. In fact, you will find lots of moms will save cardboard moving boxes because of this very motivation.
You can find cardboard boxes just about anywhere you look. You can find them for shipping or storage purposes. In case your dog or cat is used to boarding kennels and catteries, then these are a very good option. You understand that they are going to be securely contained in a hygienic, illness-free location, effectively-fed and exercised, with professional care and probably the company of other pets as nicely, depending on the insurance policies of the establishment.
In case your canine or cat has by no means been boarded and you have a number of months of advance preparation in your transfer, then it’s possible you’ll need to think about boarding your pet on a trial basis (e.g., for one night time), in order that they’ll grow to be accustomed to the concept and perceive that you will return for them.
This way, when they are boarded through the transfer, this won’t be a novel expertise and will not come as a shock to them – on prime of all the opposite disturbances associated with moving to a new home.
For birds and small mammals, enquire at your native pet stores as some may be willing to board your pets for a payment on a brief-time period basis. It may even simply be a case of them taking care of your pets overnight or during the day, while the move is occurring, and you will choose them up at the end of the day to take them to their new home.
Alternatively, when you’ve got trusted pals or family with the suitable space and living preparations, you could like to ask them to take care of your pets for the duration of your move. This may increasingly have the added bonus of your pets being familiar with their carer, due to this fact making the temporary keep much less demanding for them.
In the event you can’t take away your pets to a different place altogether for no matter cause, then at the very least, have them securely contained and brought to a quiet spot away from the main areas of removal. Smaller dogs and cats can be securely contained in crates or cages, similarly birds and small rodents.
Massive canines could must be safely tethered. All animals should solely be left in the shade, with enough water and shelter, and remain under supervision the complete time.
Preparation Before Moving House
Before the move, make sure that you have updated your dog or cat’s title tag (and any microchip particulars) with the brand new tackle and an up-to-date contact number. Ensure that additionally that you’ve got an up-to-date, clear photograph of your pet – within the occasion that it gets misplaced and you could set up a search. As well as, have your veterinarian’s quantity useful in case of any accidents or emergencies.
Put together all your pet’s gear in a bag, ready for straightforward transport and in addition so that you can find things easily, should you out of the blue want to use his leash or water bowl, for example. Have a small provide of its usual meals and treats readily accessible, to be able to easily feed your pet during or after the move, if you’re settling into our new home.
If your pet is not used to being contained in a cage or crate, take some time in the weeks earlier than the transfer to get him/her used to the situation. Use positive reinforcement (equivalent to feeding your pet’s meals in the cage, giving it treats and food rewards when it enters voluntarily and stroking or praising your pet when it is spending time inside the cage) to teach it to get used to the cage with good issues and gradually build up the time it has to spend within the cage, ranging from a couple of minutes and working up to some hours. If doubtful, seek the advice of a professional trainer.
After you move in, acclimatise your pet
Depending on the character of your pet, you’ll in all probability uncover that they really like the change that a transfer brings. Since canines are extra connected to you than to their home, they will adjust rapidly so long as you are round them. I still prefer to keep their toys, blankets and further chew bones with me simply so that they feel comforted and to maintain them busy.
Keep both cats and dogs in a separate room when the movers are out and in of the house. Ensure you get dog tags printed and maintain them on a leash when taking them for walks in their new neighborhood. This is a good idea even when first visiting a brand new doggie park – just until your canine turns into used to where they are and the place they belong. It is also an effective way to introduce them to new associates and to see how they’re adjusting. Also, your canine will wish to make frequent stops to mark territory, to track the other canines’ scent and to find this new stomping ground. Allow them to discover, but watch out of modifications to their walking environment reminiscent of visitors, street noise or other dogs fenced into yards. In my sister’s case, her one canine had spent her complete life within the nation, so dealing with traffic was a little bit of an adjustment.
For cats, attempt to keep them in a small room with their meals and litter for a couple of days. They will be a bit scared and find some place to cover but they are going to finally get used to their surroundings and can start to get again to regular and explore your new home.
During your house move, you will be so busy with packing and logistics, you will probably forget to notify people of your change of address and will do it randomly as it comes up. Your Man with a Van Tip for the best way not to miss notifying anyone is to make a list. Conveniently listed below are the people you should have on your list.
If it is too tedious to do this one by one, you can always use a change of address service who will do this for you.
A helpful reminder of who you should notify of your house move:
Your family and friends
Your mobile phone provider
The utility companies
Your banks and credit cards
Your children’s schools and tutors
Any local association, club or meeting you belong to
Any magazine or newspaper subscriptions
Any storecards or loyalty cards
Any frequent flyer cards so you don’t miss out on the specials
Your workplace
Home security companies
Your local authority for council taxes, etc
Car and home insurance companies
Your libraries
Post redirection
You may actually notify the Post Office of your move and set up the time frame for your mail to be forwarded to your new location. This easy and stress free way of announcing your relocation is one of the most popular ways of conveniently letting everyone know that you are moving house.
It might also be useful to sign up for the post office’s redirection service in case you have overlooked certain companies or organisations as the post office will then be able to redirect any mail that was originally sent to your old address and redirect it to your new one, whether that be in the UK or even overseas.
You can sign up to have your mail redirected for one, three, six or twelve months for up to 2 years although there is a charge for this service. All this can be done easily online or just pop into the post office to get a form and do it on the phone.
It is definitely worth the peace of mind to ensure that all mail gets redirected to you as there may be bills which you have overlooked and you are bound to forget to notify some companies that occassionally send you catalogues and brochures. This way you can will not miss any mail from distant friends and relatives who tend to send you Christmas or birthday cards that you might have forgotten to notify.
Change of Address cards
Some people like to use personalised Change of Address cards to let others know that they would be moving to other location. This is even much easier and very elegant solution as we can all print the cards at home and be able to add any unique touches to the cards as we want.
Other people just buy some nicely colored stock cards, add their unique personal message and even the pictures of their new home and send this out to all the relevant people they want to notify of their move. This might be a nice activity to involve your children and is a good way to keep them busy and occupied.
Not everyone has the time and energy to create their unique change of address cards even though it might be fun to do. You can contact a local card printing service to do the job for you or you can simply search online to get some professional and reasonably priced services from specialist printers.
Whichever option you choose, just make sure that you start by making a list so you don’t miss out any essential communications. Read more tips from your London Man and Vanhere.

Andy - 10 Oct 2011
Amazing! We moved flat this Saturday and had an excellent experience with these guys. They are running an excellent business here - I was very impressed. We were very disorganised at the pick-up but he didn't mind and helped us get everything into the van as well as packing some boxes and bags with us. Journey in the van was fun with both my wife and I sitting in the front. At the destination, it got even better, he's like a machine! Up and down to the second floor carrying all the boxes faster than I'd take the stairs without boxes. Even awkward items weren't that awkward to him. Just amazing, so glad we booked with them. Lower price too than other services in the area - the flat fee rather than time based was also much better and the main reason we chose these guys. Highly recommended and we'll definitely use them again.

The service was great! Leonardo arrived exactly on time and was brilliant with helping me to move. He just got on with it and was a pleasure to work with. I would really recommend this service to anyone who is moving. I was a bit anxious about it as I was a girl moving on my own but they were great! Really good value too!
Really solid and pleasant service. Much more than I was expecting. Good phone service, confirmation by email, driver was perfectly on time, and perfectly helpful. We had no problems working together to move the stuff and offload into the right place at the location. He didn't just dump my things inside the door! Good value for money too. Angus, London
This was a great service and really good value for money. I was helped to move really quickly and with no fuss or stress. There were quite a lot of stairs involved in the move and there was no complaint or hassle. Would definitely use Helping2Move again and recommend them to anyone. Charlotte, London
